TL;DR
Adding social media links to your Google Business Profile (GBP) does not directly improve your Google Maps ranking. However, it significantly boosts your "social proof" and conversion rates by giving customers more ways to verify your business's vibe and credibility. For actual ranking growth, you should focus on profile completeness, reviews, and high-quality local citations.

"7 Steps to Getting Into the 3-Pack"
Discover the proven system LocalBizGuys uses to get small businesses ranking fast.
I’ve been getting this question a lot lately from business owners who’ve noticed a small but significant change to their Google Business Profile (GBP). You’re poking around your listing, and suddenly, poof!, there are those familiar little icons for Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, or TikTok sitting right there at the bottom of your business card.
It looks sleek. It feels "official." And naturally, as a savvy business owner, your first thought is: "Is this the secret sauce that’s going to catapult me to the top of the Local 3-Pack?"
I hate to be the bearer of "meh" news, but the short answer is: No. Simply adding these links isn’t going to magically lift you from spot #10 to spot #1 in the Map pack.
However, before you close this tab and give up on your social media strategy, there is a much bigger story here. While these links aren't a direct "ranking signal," they are a massive "trust signal." And in the world of local SEO, trust often leads to the clicks that eventually tell Google you’re the best business in town.
Let’s dive into why Google finally gave us these links, how they actually affect your business, and what you should be doing instead if your goal is purely to rank higher.
Why Did Google Add Social Links?
For years, Google tried to pull social media information automatically. Sometimes it worked; sometimes it linked your HVAC business to a random teenager’s Instagram account in another country. It was messy.
By allowing you to manually add these links through your GBP dashboard, Google is doing two things:
- Cleaning up their data: They want to be the one-stop shop for everything a customer needs to know about you.
- Keeping users engaged: If a customer isn't ready to call you yet, Google would rather they click over to your Instagram to see your work than go back to the search results and click on a competitor.

The "Ranking" Reality Check
According to the latest research and everything we see here at LocalBizGuys, social media activity, the likes, the shares, the followers, and the links, does not directly move the needle on your Google Maps ranking.
Google’s algorithm for the Map Pack is primarily built on three pillars: Relevance, Distance, and Prominence.
- Relevance: How well does your profile match what the user is searching for?
- Distance: How far is your business from the searcher?
- Prominence: How well-known is your business (reviews, backlinks, citations)?
Social media links don't really fall into these categories. In fact, even your website's SEO has a smaller impact on your Map ranking than most people realize. If you’re struggling to be seen, you’re likely dealing with a different set of issues. You might want to check out why your profile isn't showing up in local search anymore to see if you’ve been hit by a filter or a suspension.
The Indirect Win: How Social Links Help You Rank Later
If social links don't provide a direct boost, why do we still recommend adding them? Because of something called Indirect Impact.
Imagine two local bakeries. Both are in the same neighborhood. Both have 4.5 stars.
- Bakery A has no social links.
- Bakery B has an Instagram link where I can see fresh, steaming cinnamon rolls posted just two hours ago.
I’m clicking on Bakery B every single time.
When more people click your profile, spend time looking at your photos, and eventually click your "Call" or "Website" button, Google notices. This "user engagement" is a signal. If Google sees that users consistently choose your listing over others, they will eventually reward you with a higher position.
Furthermore, having a cohesive digital presence across social media helps Google understand your "Entity." As we move into the era of Google’s AI Overviews, the more Google knows about your business from various sources, the more likely you are to be cited as an authority in their AI-generated answers.

What Actually Moves the Needle for Map Rankings?
If you’re looking to dominate the local competition, adding your Facebook link should be item #10 on your list. Items #1 through #5 should be the "Heavy Hitters."
1. Review Management
Reviews are your secret weapon. It’s not just about the number of stars, but the frequency and the keywords people use in those reviews. If people are saying "best plumber in Chicago," Google picks up on that relevance. If you need to speed things up, here is the fastest way to get more customer reviews.
2. Category Accuracy
Are you a "Pizza Restaurant" or just a "Restaurant"? Being specific matters. We’ve seen businesses jump five spots just by fixing their primary and secondary categories. This is especially true if you offer multiple distinct services. For instance, did you know you might be able to have different profiles for different services at the same address?
3. Consistency (NAP)
NAP stands for Name, Address, and Phone number. If your Facebook page has one phone number and your Google profile has another, you’re confusing the algorithm. It’s vital to fix incorrect information or hours immediately to ensure Google trusts your data.
4. Photos and Updates
Google loves fresh content. Businesses that regularly post photos and "Updates" (like mini-blog posts) tend to see better visibility than those that set it and forget it. I dive deep into this in my post about adding photos and posts for better rankings.

How to Add Your Social Links (The Right Way)
Ready to add them? It only takes a minute.
- Go to your Google Business Profile (search "my business" on Google).
- Click Edit Profile.
- Under the Contact tab, look for Social Profiles.
- Add the URL for your Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc.
Pro Tip: Make sure your social profiles are public. If your Instagram is set to "Private," clicking that link will lead your customers to a dead end, which is a terrible user experience.
The Verdict: Do It, But Don't Stop There
Adding your social media links is a "Low Effort, High Trust" move. It won't give you a ranking boost overnight, but it builds a more professional image. It tells your customers, "We are active, we are real, and here is proof of our work."
In the grand scheme of things, it’s just one small piece of a comprehensive 3-pack optimization strategy. If you want to really beat the guy down the street, you have to look at the whole picture, from your review response strategy to how you handle bad reviews when they inevitably pop up.
"Your Google Business Profile is often the 'front door' of your business. Social links are the windows that let people peek inside before they decide to walk in."
